The Latest In Iowa Haze - November Edition

Driving back from Chicago I recall a recent trip to Binny's Beverage Depot where I loaded up a cart with beers called "Dank Juice" and "Foggy Geezer." We're already out of puns for cloudy, "New England Style" beers. Epic Brewing simply renamed their Citra Lush "New England Style IPA." Simple and effective. I bought it.

It's not a fad (sorry Mr. small town brewer who shall remain nameless). It's the hottest style in beer and it's easy to see why. It's sweet. Void of Crystal Caramel malts and copper color and full of sweetness derived from hops with a mouth-feel that matches its eye-appeal. That gorgeous, sweet goodness is the reason I stopped in tiny LeClaire, Iowa, to grab 64 ounces of Ceiling Zero. A citra juice-bomb you all should make a point to try.

I'm going to try to keep up with the revolution, or shall we say evolution, as it takes here in the Iowa scene. Everyday an Iowa brewery is throwing their hat in the turbid, double dry hopped JUICE game. As they do, we'll preview and or discuss those that have been sampled.

BACKPOCKET IC WAVE - Peaches and Cream Milkshake IPA 5.5% ABV

Backpocket dropped Hazy Forecast in bombers back in September and I'll admit I was a little scared off by the price ($13.99/22 oz). I didn't get a chance to try it but I do hope this latest milkshake IPA makes its way to Des Moines. This IC Wave is currently draft only and gets its name from vanilla bean, fruit and the lactose that produces the creamy mouth-feel. Wave currently sits at 4.11 via Untappd users.

FRANKLIN STREET DRUGSTORE COWBOY - NE Style IPA 6% ABV

This beer was introduced on Untapped (4.22 rating) on August 9th, 2017. Its description brags of "loads of late kettle and dry hopping of 2.5 lbs of hops per barrel." The hop bill is Citra, Galaxy and El Dorado. A nice straw malt bill of Pale and Maris give that orange shine. This small Manchester, Iowa, brewery is quickly getting noticed and they just announced on Facebook another juicy IPA is in the works.

BARN TOWN HOP SKEWER - NE Style IPA 6.4% ABV
Like Drugstore Cowboy, this beer was a summer release. Just last week, the second batch of Hop Skewer hit the taps and dare I say it's better than the first? Hop Skewer is dry hopped with Citra and El Dorado hops and might be the most bitter of BT's offerings to date. And that's a good thing. Untappd users like Skewer with a 4.19 on 428 ratings.

IOWA BREWING CO. CAN'T BUY A TRILL - NE Style IPA 6.8% ABV

"Wow!" says Iowa Brew Co's description of this beer. The brewery describes mango and peach flavors delivered from Galaxy, Amarillo, Columbus and Ahtanum hops. If you can't buy a Trillium, might as well this. I suppose.
