The Latest in Iowa Haze | December Edition

I've often imagined the conversation when people were first introduced to a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Or wished I could see their faces when Greg Koch wore his beer on his back trying to sell his "bitter" Stone IPA. Hop forward, piney, bitter beers were never going to last. Until they did.

For a beer to be considered a great beer, it had to have a perfect balance between the sweet malt and bitter hops. Those rules still apply, but palates now demand more of the flavors from the evolving hop ingredient that now produces fruit flavors like mango, orange and grapefruit.

And then there's the eyes.

Beers that look like Orange Juice kinda-sorta taste like Orange Juice. Appearance, taste, texture, smell. The NE Style IPA checks all the sensory triggers. It's here to stay, similar to the Pale Ale and IPA. 2018 will be the year of the NE Style IPA in Iowa beer. That's my prediction, at least

So, what's new? In November, I profiled Barn Town's Hop Skewer, Franklin Street's Drugstore Cowboy, Backpocket's IC Wave and Iowa Brewing Company's Can't Buy a Trill. The first two are still around some in the Des Moines market if you didn't get a taste. So, what's new?

MADHOUSE  CITRA STORM - 69 IBU 7.8% ABV
Announced as a tap only release and part of Madhouse's new plans for 2018, there's kegs floating around the Des Moines' metro and Cedar Rapids markets. It's marketed as a "hazy, juicy NE Style IPA," of course. Citra hops, duh.

BARN TOWN - FIELD OF DREAMS - N/A TBD
Not yet tapped, but soon, another new hazy IPA from Barn Town in West Des Moines. This one is is all Iowa hops. The total hop bill is unknown but whole cone Centennial hops from Stiff Breeze hops in Madison County Iowa are included. I expect this one ready before Christmas.

BACKPOCKET - IC WAVE STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKE - 5.5% ABV
Back this month is last month's popular IC Wave but this time with strawberries added. If that's not sweet enough for you, remember a portion of sales goes to the Iowa City Children's Hospital.

LION BRIDGE - MAJESTIC BEAST WINTER APA - 7.1% ABV
While technically not marketed as a NE Style, there's still quite a bit of hazy appearance from this one. Lion Bridge describes this beaut as their "first foray into lupulin powders has produced this mirthful beverage." There's Eukunot and Mosiac hops in there. Take a look:

FRANKLIN STREET - DIRTY LORAL SECRET 6.0% ABV
Released towards the end of  November but still around Central Iowa is Franklin Street's second NE Style IPA to hit tap lines. This juice bomb contains Mosiac, Loral and Vic Secret hops. After 200+ Untappd check-ins, this beer sits at a hefty 4.28 bottle caps. Two great NE Style beers seems appropriate from a town called Manchester.

BIG GROVE - EASY EDDY IPA 6.5% ABV
Marketed as an IPA, this unfiltered beer made with wheat and oak flakes is crazy hazy. Easy Eddy was first introduced in May of 2017 but is back on tap for the holiday season. There's Citra and Loral lupulin powder followed by a dry-hop session with Citra, Mosiac and Mandarina Bavaria hop powder.

EXILE - NELSON SAUVIN IPA 6.0% ABV
For the second time in a month, Exile has had a Friday afternoon tap of a juicy, hazy beer from their local pilot system. This take on the NE Style IPA has a touch of Citra and is dry-hopped with Australian Nelson Sauvin hops.

PULPIT ROCK- MILKSHAKE COLLAB?
In addition to new beer from Barn Town, be ready for some Milkshake with your $ticker $hock. Here's the tweet:
