Iowa Beer Blog Iowa IPA Bracket Tournament Play-In Games Announced

Before the 32 beer IBB IPA bracket challenge can get started, there's tough decisions for the committee to make. It's determined there's a need for two additional match-up to determine final seeding to be unveiled next Sunday, February 25th. The committee has proposed two "play-in" games to determine two final entries.

Both match-ups will embed below and be open for voting on Twitter today, Sunday Feb. 18 - Monday Feb 19. Twitter voting will remain open for 24 hours (time stamps in each tweet). Future voting will be done via embedded polls in blog posts publishing Feb. 26 and open through Saturday March 3rd. This Twitter voting format will only be utilized for the play-in round. Each round will follow a Monday-Saturday vote timing.

The first play-in match will compete for the 16th seed on the Eastern Iowa bracket. The winner of this play-in competition will face the #1 seed which based on the committee's early release of possible seeding, had Pulpit Rock's Stink Juice #1. The final seeding, of course, is still TBD.

The second play-in match-up will compete for the 12th seed on the Central Iowa side of the bracket. Last week's committee release had Alluvial's Helix on that #5 line but again, that's a fluid situation.

The match-ups:

For the 16th seed in the East we have ReUnion Brewing's Tank Puncher vs Confluence Brewing's NE Style IPA. Tank Puncher is a big (7.3% ABV) IPA that brings the tropical fruit punch. Confluence's NE Style IPA is loaded with Citra and Hull Melon hops for citrus juicy flavors as well.

For the 12th seed, we see Peace Tree's newest East Village IPA. It's made as a toast to their town where taproom #2 exists. It's a 6% ABV Citra and Mosiac hopped American Pale Ale. Peace Tree faces off against 515 Brewing's OJ Get's Lei'd. Also, new(ish) from a Des Moines brewery, this is a hat tip to Hawai'i and or tropical destinations. It's their flagship OJ IPA but with pineapple and coconut flavors added.

As you see, tough decisions all around and it will only get tougher. All four beers above fall in the 3.9-4.0 range on Untappd. Who will earn the right and be the first two teams to cement their place in the final 32 beer bracket? Vote and see.
