Iowa Beer Blog IPA/Pale Ale Tournament | Vote For Which Beer Will Advance To The Final

The polls are open for the Fabulous Four. We see two Toppling Goliath beers face-off to decide one Championship spot. The Eastern Iowa bracket pairs Pulpit Rock's Saftig vs. Franklin Street's Drugstore Cowboy. It's the #2 vs. #4 seed on each side of the bracket.

Voting is open today through Saturday, March 24th at noon. Let's go:

Central Iowa bracket Round 4:

GAME 1

#2 TOPPLING GOLIATH DOUBLE DRY HOPPED PSEUDO SUE

How did it get here: How does the beer considered by this blog the best Iowa IPA in 2017 get a #2 seed? It literally came out of nowhere. The first bottles of DDH Sue from the new Decorah facility were bottled on 2/08/2018 and first landed in Chicago. It then made a surprise arrival to Iowa shelves last Friday. It looks like King Sue may return for her second run through the new system too but she is left out of this tournament after that poor December showing.

DDH is the famous Pseudo Sue with an additional round of Citra hops added. It keeps the same 5.8% ABV but ups the citrus, flowers, rainbows and unicorns. Untappd users love it at 4.48 bottle caps with over 17250 check-ins.

VS.

#4 TOPPLING GOLIATH FIRE, SKULLS AND MONEY

How it got here: FSM was a new beer from TG, released in March of 2017. It was almost immediate that it became one of the state's best IPAs and finished 4th on my list of Iowa's best IPAs in 2017. It's a beautiful marriage of Citra, Mosiac, Galaxy and Nelson hops over an unfiltered hazy soup that resembles a NE Style IPA. It's a perfect 7% ABV and Untappd users love this at 4.31 bottle caps with nearly 10,000 check-ins.

Eastern Iowa bracket Round 4:

GAME 2

#2 FRANKLIN STREET DRUGSTORE COWBOY

How it got here: This beer made its debut in August of 2017 and has been selling out fast at their taproom and across Central Iowa. It's a beer that quickly put the Manchester, Iowa, brewery on the map. It's dry-hopped with 2.5 pounds of Citra, Galaxy and El Dorado hops. The backbone is a light combination of Maris, Pale, Wheat and Oats. Untappd users have been loving this for months and it sits at a cool 4.17 bottle caps with over 800 check-ins.

VS.

#4 PULPIT ROCK SAFTIG NE STYLE IPA

How it got here: For many new breweries, it's usually a tasty IPA that puts them on the map for markets outside of their own town. For Pulpit Rock, that beer was probably Mr. Hoppy Pants. But, you can make the argument for Saftig too, debuting in December of 2015. It's a hazy, unfiltered IPA with Mosiac and Simcoe hops that explode on the nose and the tongue. It sits at a very fair 6.1% ABV and a steady 45 IBUs. Maybe, PR's most available beer, Untappd users like it at 4.12 bottle caps with over 3500 check-ins.
