Beer Review | Backpocket Brewing Barrel-Aged Wake the F Up Iowa

Beer: Wake the F Up Iowa
Style: Barrel-Aged Coffee Imperial Stout
ABV: 10.4%

Backpocket Brewing is woke! At least when it comes to producing high quality barrel-aged stouts. Over the Summer I reviewed their 6th Anniversary Stout and enjoyed it so much that naturally I drove around town chasing down this beer that arrived in Des Moines last evening.

Wake the F Up Iowa is BP's base coffee stout brewed with beans roasted at Wake Up coffee Iowa City. The base beer comes in around 6% ABV but here they beefed up the beer's backbone to make it a little more viscous and a lot more chocolate-y.

The Cedar Ridge and Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels offer a subtle whiskey hint. Not overpowering, just present. The same can be said for the coffee notes. Again, not overpowering and slightly light on the nose. Still, as the beer warms the flavors are more pronounced. I picked up vanilla and a hint of warm butter as the beer reached room temps. The most dominant of all remained the dark chocolate malts.

This beer was good, almost great. Backpocket has my trust now when it comes to barrel-aged stouts. Hopefully next time, this gets released in 4-pack of 12 ounce bottles so we can have some for now and save some for later.

Overall: 4.30 bottle caps (out of five)
